Marjorie Belle Correll Overholt, age 90, of Newport passed away Friday, August 15, 2003, at Baptist Convalescent Center.
She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Newport but later moved her membership when Southside Mission, which she helped found, became Southside Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday school teacher most of her adult life.
Mrs. Overholt attended Maryville College and East Tennessee State University and later taught at several schools in Cocke County, including Talley Memorial. She was a past president and charter member of the Lioness Club. She also served as past president of Newport Garden Club, Farm Bureau Women's Club, and the Retired Teachers' Association.
Her husband, Connie, co-founder of Overholt's Hardware and Home Supply of Newport, preceded Marjorie in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Mack Henry Correll and Amanda Maude Correll, sisters Dorothy Jones of Florida, Gloria Jean Coulter of Maryville, and brother, James Nile Correll of White Pine.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Lee and wife, Patricia; Joseph Ira and wife, Charlotte; and daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie Ann Smith and husband, Larry; sister, Hope C. Shults and brother Mack Truman (Jim) Correll of Newport; grandchildren and their spouses: Mike and Lisa Overholt, Susan Overholt Drinnon and Alan Drinnon, Jennifer Smith Eisenhower and Brian Eisenhower, Lee Jay Smith, Dan Overholt and Candy, James Patrick Overholt, and John Overholt; six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Special caregivers and friends are Marjorie Basinger, Evelyn Smith, W. C. (Dub) and Mary Vinson.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening, August 17, 2003, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Manes Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at Southside Baptist Church on Monday, August 18, at 10:00 a.m. followed by a burial service at Union Cemetery in Newport. The body will lie in state from 9:30 until 10:00 a.m.
Friends may wish to make a donation to the charity or church of their choice (in lieu of flowers) as a memorial to Mrs. Overholt.
