Newman, Jr, Dr. (Buther) Lee, age 83, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2007 at St Mary’s Residential Hospice. Born July 17, 1924, in Knoxville, TN, the son of the late B.L. Newman, Sr., and Hetty Reed Newman. Proceeded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Heaton Newman. Educated in Knoxville City Schools, including former Park City-Lowery and Park Junior High. Graduate of Knoxville High School class of 41B. Veteran of WWII, serving in various training capacities in both Navy flight training and Army Air Force. Attended both UT Knoxville and UT Chattanooga as undergraduate. Awarded Doctor of Optometry Officer and served on staff of various clinics and hospitals including NAS, San Diego, USNH, Charleston, Yokosuka, Japan, Naval School of Aviation Medicine, Pensacola, FL, and USNH, Charleston, SC. Upon retirement from the Navy in 1971, he practiced in Fountain City area until 1992. Member of Tennessee and American Optometric Associations, serving as board member of TOA and President of Tennessee Academy of Optometry. Fellow of both Tennessee and American Academy of Optometry. Served as deacon and later ruling elder of First Presbyterian, Knoxville. Presently a member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. Survivors Survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kristy Anita and Donald Edwards Rochat, granddaughter, Emilee Marie Dockery, and great-grandson, Jarred Ashton Dockery. Also survived by his sister, Ruth Horner and brother James Edmond Newman. Service Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at 8:00PM at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel with Dr. Sean White and Rev. Roy Zinn officiating. Graveside service will be on Wednesday July 25, 2007 at 1:30PM at TN Veterans Cemetery with full Military Honors to be provided by Volunteer State Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8PM at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel.
