Victim critical after vehicle falls down 50-foot cliff into Little Pigeon River

SEVIERVILLE - A Sevierville man was in critical condition Monday evening after the vehicle he was driving skidded off Red Bank Road, flipped, tumbled down a 50-foot rock cliff, and ended up on its side in the Little Pigeon River's middle prong.
Nicholas J. Parton, 19, was unconscious when rescue officials arrived to find him in a submerged Ford Ranger pickup truck. Members of the Sevierville Fire Department's swiftwater rescue team pulled Parton from the vehicle and found he was not breathing, firefighter Steve Whaley said.
"They pulled him out of the water and he was unconscious at that time," Whaley said. "They performed CPR on him there on the shore."
The chilly water may have helped save Parton's life, as it slows down the bodily processes of a victim, lessening the trauma, Whaley said.
Parton was transported to Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center where he was stabilized and airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. As of Monday evening, Parton was in the hospital's trauma unit.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. Clinton Valentine, Parton was traveling on Red Bank Road around 2:30 p.m. when he lost control of the truck in a curve. The vehicle then flipped, sliding on its roof until it went over the cliff and plunged into the river.
"I don't know that he was going too fast for the road, but he certainly might have been for the conditions because it was raining pretty heavily at the time," Valentine said.
No charges are expected in the incident, Valentine said.
In addition to the Sevierville Fire Department and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department, Sevierville Police, Sevier County Ambulance Service and the Sevier County Rescue Squad responded to the scene.
