Ralph H. Shuler (Papaw Chiz), 86, of Townsend, passed from this life on Nov. 18, 2008, with his children by his side. Born in Cades Cove on Oct. 27, 1922. Graduate of Townsend High School. Proudly served his country in World War II (Combat Engineer). Member of Tuckaleechee United Methodist Church. Retired from ALCOA with 31 years, 51-year member of New Providence Lodge #128, 32nd Degree Scottish Rites Mason and a Shriner. He was wealthy in children, grandchildren, family and friends. Preceded in death by his "forever sweetheart," Kathryne Sullivan Shuler; infant daughter, Virginia Lee; grandsons, Eric and "Mikey"; parents, George and Maude Shuler; brothers, Dillard and Doil Shuler, sister, Lavon Shuler Garner. Survivors: sons, Allen (Gayle) Shuler, David (Ann) Shuler, Michael (Susan) Shuler; daughters, Kathy Murrell, Martha (Gary) Dickson; brothers, Vance (Joan) Shuler; sisters, DeLynn (Cecil) Caylor and Barbara Shuler; sister-in-law, Ola Strickland, all of Townsend; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; many friends from his work at Alcoa and the Townsend community. Family will receive friends from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Smith Funeral and Cremation Service. Funeral service to follow at 7:30 p.m., Rev. Harrison Hill officiating. Graveside service at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Townsend 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, with special Masonic graveside service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shoe Fund for Scottish Rites, c/o New Providence Lodge, 318 Ellis Ave., Maryville, TN 37804. The Shuler Family will not be gathering at the family home.
