U.S. Veteran James Edgar “Papaw” Garner, age 81, of Maryville, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee. He was of the Baptist Faith and owner of Garner’s Barber Shop and a local barber for 61 years. Mr. Garner was a favorite local barber and was proud to be at the barber shop and appreciated and enjoyed serving his customers through out the years, this is what made Mr. Garner happy and enjoy life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Lavan Shuler Garner; parents, Spencer and Lillie Garner; and brothers in law, Doil Shuler and Dillard Shuler. Survivors include his son and daughter in law, Donnie and Sammie Garner of Maryville; daughter and son in law, Peggy and Wayne Stephenson of Maryville; grandchildren and fellow barbers, Timmy Stephenson and Christy Stephenson both of Maryville; adopted grandson and fellow barber, Marcus Payne of Maryville; brothers and sisters in law, Ralph and Eula Garner, and Alvin and Imogene Garner all of Knoxville; brothers in law and sister in law, Ralph Shuler, Vance and Joann Shuler all of Townsend, sisters in law and brother in law, Barbara Shuler, and DeLynn and Cecil Caylor all of Townsend; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2007 at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel, Rev. Scott Potter and Rev. Paul Dyar officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery (formerly Chilhowee View Cemetery) for the graveside service and interment.
