Former Townsend Mayor John 'Gaddis' Webb dies
Former Townsend Mayor John Byrd "Gaddis" Webb died Thursday at home at age 84.
A native of Denmark, S.C., Webb grew up in Townsend and attended the University of Tennessee. He traveled to Chicago, Hartford, Nashville and Maryville, with INA/Aetna Division of Cigna for 32 years.
He fulfilled a dream when he returned to Townsend in 1970 to stay. According to his family, he served at least 18 years on the Townsend City Council, mostly in the position of mayor. Several of his siblings also served with him on the council through the years.
When asked by the family to describe Webb, both his wife, Elizabeth, and son, Gary, talked about his sense of humor. The pair said that, when family and friends have reminisced about him, they all talked of Webb's joking and teasing them.
"He also loved cooking out in the grill and made the best hamburgers and chicken," his wife said.
Webb loved gardening, fishing, hunting and visiting Cades Cove. He took several fishing trips to Canada. He also liked following Vols football and basketball and the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
"He also loved his family and was a great dad," Gary said.
Webb is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Tipton Webb; three sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Nancy Webb of Townsend, Wayne and Catherine Webb of St. Helena Island, S.C., Gary and Tiffany Webb of Seymour; grandchildren, Whitney Webb of Townsend, Michael and Katie Webb of St. Helena Island, Alex and Grant Webb of Seymour; brother and sister-in-law, Ray Gordon and Sara Webb of Walland; and sister, Ruth Davis of North Carolina; brother-in-law, William Tipton of Rockford, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Catherine and V.L. Daughtery of Valdosta, Ga,; and several nieces and nephews.

After receiving his degree, John taught school at Townsend High School and spent his summers working as a ranger in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. In 1985, John retired as Territorial Manager of INA/Aetna Division of Cigna after 32 years. His insurance friends referred to him as East Tennessee Man because of his love for the Smoky Mountains. After living in Chicago, Hartford, Nashville and Maryville, he returned to his beloved Townsend where he served as Mayor and Commissioner for a total of 18 years. During his 18 years of service to the city of Townsend, he was instrumental in keeping it, as he called it “the quiet side of the smokies”, the way he remembered it as a child growing up there.
