Cades Cove, August 11, 1902---The death of John Tipton which occurred on last Saturday night at his brother Isaac’s home is one of the most lamentable affairs of a life time in this place and has cast a gloom over our entire community. It has saddened the hearts of many and the scene enacted around the lifeless corpse will long be remembered by those that witnessed them.
It seems as though several had gathered at the home of Isaac Tipton; a stew had been made and they were having what they call a good time. At a late hour all left for home except John Tipton and Sam Burchfield, the father-in-law of Isaac and uncle of John’s. After some time, John quarreled with Isaac, which was soon over. Later, Burchfield and John quarreled, and Burchfield left the house, but soon returned and called to John to come out. John Tipton started out and his brother tried to keep him from going. He had only went a few steps when a gun was fired and John fell into the arms of his brother.
He was helped inside the door and was dead in a few hours. He leaves a wife and five children, most of them are small. Burchfield is near 75 years old, blind in one eye and feeble in health. Both families have the sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow. The men were the best of friends. "Whiskey was the cause of the trouble.
On Monday, Sam Burchfield was brought to town by officers, and lodged in jail to await trial for the murder of John Tipton, who he killed last Saturday night, in an election row in Cade’s Cove, this county. It seems they got into a dispute over the election, Burchfield being a democrat, and Tipton a republican. Burchfield left Tipton in a rage, went home and secured a shot gun, coming back, shot and killed him. He was arrested, tried by Squire Gregory and brought to Maryville. Burchfield is an aged man, being 65 years old, and is almost blind. This makes the second murder which has occurred in our county, during the past two weeks. Something will have to be done to stop this wholesale killing.
