KELLEY, REVEREND MAX L. - age 77 of Alcoa, passed away November 14, 2002. He was born less than two miles away from where he lived most of his life. Jesus came for him while he was cleaning leaves in his yard. He always said that he would rather wear out than rust out. Rev. Kelley was a Sailor on the U.S.S. D.R. Hill during World War II when she was sunk in the Atlantic by a German U-Boat. Many lives were lost when the destroyer went down. He worked at the ALCOA Plant for 38 years before he retired. He was a member of their 25-Year Club. During the 55 years that Brother Max was a preacher, he was pastor at eight different churches in Blount County. He spent seven years at Lone Oak Baptist Church. He was always a "hands on" minister, visiting the sick and the elderly after his retirement. He will be greatly missed here in this world but God has another job for him. Papaw Kelley was preceded in passing by: father, Claude D.
