John (Richard) Sissum, 87, of Louisville, passed away Monday, November 21, 2011, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years (the love of his life), Anna Margaret Quillen Sissum. He was a WWII Purple Heart recipient Navy veteran serving in Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He was one of the oldest active members of Zion Chapel Baptist Church. He was a member of the 25 Year club at ALCOA. He was a founding alderman and a former vice mayor of Louisville. He is survived by his children, Richard (Yogi) and Linda Sissum of Seymour, Jack Sissum, Kay and Bill Bales, all of Louisville, Ron Sissum of Maryville, Wayne and Jean Sissum of Gates, Tenn.; grandchildren, Angie, Phyllis and Tommy, Brandon, Cheryl and John, and Holly; 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Inez Melton of Louisville, Betty Thompson of Corona Del Mar, Calif. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, November 25, 2011, at Zion Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Malone officiating. The family and friends will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 26, 2011, at Sherwood Memorial Gardens for an entombment service with full military honors provided by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the Church. Memorial Funeral Home in Maryville is in charge of arrangements.
