Proclamation honors Grady Webb at Cosby in the Park
COSBY-Retired National Park employee Grady Webb was recognized for his many years of service to the park service during opening ceremonies at Cosby in the Park 2008 on Saturday.
Webb, whose Cosby birthplace is now encompassed by Great Smoky Mountains National Park, began his Park Service career as a seasonal employee of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
He later became a District Ranger for the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Chief Ranger at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Superintendent of Fort Pulaski National Monument, and Superintendent of the Andrew Johnson National Historic site in Greeneville.
Current GSMNP Superintendent Dale Ditmanson and Cocke County Mayor Iliff McMahan, Jr. joined together on Saturday in reading a proclamation recognizing Webb's career.
The son of the late Wilse and Mary (Williamson) Webb, the honoree attended Webb Springs School (now encompassed by GSMNP), Liberty School, and Cosby High School, prior to entering the U. S. Navy and serving his country during World War II.
Upon his return to Cocke County, Webb taught at Cosby Elementary and Cosby High Schools, serving as principal for 1 1/2 years, before joining the Park Service.
Special guests at Saturday's event included Webb's wife, the former Estelle Wilson, and their daughter, Sheryl, along with Webb's brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Irene (Wilson) Boggs, all of Cosby.
Another daughter, Mary Rebecca Webb, resides in Phoenix, Arizona and could not attend.

U.S. Veteran Grady Webb age, 88 of Cosby, passed away Thursday, June 30, 2016. He was a World War II Veteran and a member of Cosby Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Webb; and parents, Wilse and Mary Webb. He is survived by his daughters, Sheryl Webb of Cosby and Rebecca Webb of Surprise, Arizona; sisters, Genette (Bill) Stripling of North Carolina; and other family and friends. Graveside service will be 12:00 pm, Saturday, July 2, 2016 in the Waters-Large Cemetery with Dr. Dan Netherland officiating. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Pat Summitt Foundation for Alzheimer’s Research.
