STEPHENS , CHARLES GREENE - age 79, of Maryville, died Monday, December 16, 2002, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a United States Army Veteran and P.O.W. during World War II. He was assigned with the 101st Airborne Division as a Paratrooper. He served in the Invasion of Normandy (D-Day), Liberation of France and was captured by the German Army during Operation Market Garden. He retired from Levi Strauss and Co. after 20 years of service. Preceded in death by parents, Charles Herschel and Janie Freshour Stephens brother, Horace S. Stephens , and sister, Luria R. Leonard. Survivors include wife, Lennie Headrick Stephens daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie D. and Michael L. Erwin and Christy C. and Gary L. Martin, all of Maryville grandson, Charles Shannon and wife, Brenda Erwin of Sevierville great-grandsons, Quinton and Justin Erwin brother and sister-in-law, James Lee and Oma Lucy Stephens of Maryville sister and brother-in-law, Anna Lou and Dana H. Leonard of Maryville, and several nieces and nephews, friends, and special caregivers. Funeral service will be 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2002, in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary with Rev. Billy Stephens officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 19, 2002, at Chilhowee View Cemetery. He will be interred with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: American Red Cross, 301 S. Court Street, Maryville, TN 37804, or Empty Pantry Fund, PO Box 9740, Maryville, TN 37802. Friends may call at their convenience after 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2002, at Smith Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2002, Trinity Chapel, Smith Mortuary, Maryville, 865-983-1000. www.smithmortuary.comTHOMAS, EMORY FLOYD, SR. - age 86, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, December 17, 2002, in a Chattanooga nursing home. He began his professional career with the Tennessee Valley Authority at the Hales Bar Steam and Hydro Plants. He was Assistant Superintendent at the Nashville Steam Plant and then held the same Position at the Wilson Dam Steam and Hydro Plants. He came to Chattanooga in 1960, and was made Assistant Director of Power Production. he held many other positions with TVA during his long career. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mildred four children, Patricia Green of Nashville, Emory Floyd Thomas, Jr., and Frederick Thomas, both of Chattanooga, Katherine Brill of Birmingham, Ala. six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Interment will be held Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. CST in the Florence City Cemetery, Florence, Ala. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. and Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until service time at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
