U.S. Veteran John Ed Cox, age 89, formerly of Nashville, died December 17th, 2015 at the Turkey Creek Medical Center. A native of Erwin, Dr. Cox served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1949. He also earned a M.S. and Ed.D. Degrees from University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He taught at Newport High School from 1949 to 1955 and was an elementary principal and superintendent of the Clinton City Schools from 1955 to 1957. He then joined the Tennessee State Department of Education in 1957 and retired in 1995. He was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville. His family and friends will always cherish his humor, warmth, and giving compassion for others.
He was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn, his mother and father, Mildred and Clyde Cox, his sister Ruth and his brother David.
He is survived by son, John and wife, Melany; grandchildren Jay and Taylor; brothers Bill, Jim, and Donald; sister, Mary; and many loved nieces and nephews.
The family extends a special thanks to the loving ICU staff at Turkey Creek Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Music Scholarship Fund at Church Street United Methodist Church, PO Box 1303, Knoxville, TN 37901.
A gathering of friends and family will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2015 at Manes Funeral Home, 363 East Main Street, Newport, TN 37821. A memorial graveside service (weather permitting) will follow at 11:00 a.m.
There will also be a memorial service held 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Church Street United Methodist Church, 900 Henley at Main, Knoxville, TN 37901 with Rev. David Graves and Rev. Jan Wade officiating. Visiting with friends and family will be immediately after the service.
