COX , CAROLYN S. - age 72, formerly of Nashville, died September 28, 2001 at her home in Knoxville after an extended illness with breast cancer. A native of Newport, Mrs. Cox was active in the United Methodist Church and had a lifetime of volunteerism and service to others. After graduating in 1949 from Sullins College in Bristol, Tenn., she helped establish the first Girl Scout Troop and the first chapter of the service sorority, Beta Sigma Phi in Newport. She also helped to organize the Girl Scout Troop at the Tenn. School for the Blind in Nashville. She worked as a volunteer in hospitals, health care facilities, and nursing homes. She served on the Board of Directors and as an officer of the United Methodist Assoc. Of Health and Welfare Ministries. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Protestant Health and Welfare Assoc. of the National Annual Convention, on the Board of the Tenn. Hospital Assoc. Director of Volunteer Services Committee, and on the Board of the YMCA in Donelson, Tenn. She was active in the Tenn. Society of Directors of Volunteers. While working as Director of Volunteers at McKendree Village Methodist Retirement Center in Nashville, she received the 1987 Human Services Director of Volunteer Award from the United Methodist Assoc. Of Health and Welfare Ministries. In 1990, her volunteer auxiliary was recognized as the National Volunteer Group of the Year. She retired in 1992. She was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church, Knoxville. Her friends and family will lovingly remember her for her humor, her warmth and her great compassion for others. Preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Emma Roe and Artis Suggs ; and father, Paul Clevenger, all of Newport. She is survived by her husband, John Ed; son and spouse, John and Melany and grandchildren, Jay and Taylor Cox all of Knoxville. Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday Oct. 1, 2001 at Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jan Buxton-Wade and Rev. Cabel Trent officiating. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery, Newport, Tenn. Pallbearers will be Roy Campbell, Bill Cox , Jim Cox , John Eichorn, Baker Fraley, Bill Henry, Don Jarvis and Jim Runnion. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Church Street United Methodist Church P.O. Box 1303 Knoxville, Tenn. 37901 or American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Sunday Sept. 30, 2001 at Manes Funeral Home. There will also be a memorial service and celebration of life 7 p.m. Thursday Oct. 4, 2001 at church Street United Methodist Church, 900 Henley at Main, Knoxville, Tenn. 37901, with Rev. Bill Fowler officiating. Manes Funeral Home, Newport, Tenn. in charge.
