Family and friends to remember Zac Hartsell, a teenager "brave beyond words"
ZAC HARTSELL
Author: Duay O'Neil
JONES COVE-This coming Saturday, April 21, family and friends of Zac Hartsell will gather at New Salem Baptist Church in the Jones Cove community of Sevier County to remember a teenager described by his great-aunt, Dr. Janie Brown, as "brave beyond words."
They will wear orange, his favorite color, and will remember a young man whose courage and bravery throughout a grueling battle helped his family cope. "He never complained," recalled Brown. "He was brave beyond words."
The 16-year old Wisconsin resident's battle with cancer ended on March 30 after a two and one-half year journey filled with chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and doctor visits.
It began April 9, 2009, when his mother, Katherine Schilling of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, took him to the hospital for pain in his hip.
Doctors discovered a tumor the size of a grapefruit on his pelvis. "This explained the pain he had been experiencing when he walked," said Brown.
The tumor's size and pressure had actually fractured Zac's pelvis. "Scans also shows four 'hot spots' on his lungs, one on the back of his skull, one on his right shoulder, and one on his right thigh," added Brown.
Diagnosed officially on April 14 with Stage IV Ewing's Sarcoma, Zac's life, and those of his family and friends, changed as the battle to win "this ugly war began," Brown said.
