NEWPORT - One of Cocke County's most memorable educators and personalities, the late Jesse Denton, will be remembered again near the time of his birthday this October with a dinner to support scholarships in his name. The dinner will be held Monday, October 8, at Lois's Country Kitchen and will support the Jesse Denton Memorial Scholarships. Friends of Denton and supporters of educational opportunities for adult education students are urged to attend. The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. The emcee, a featured speaker, and other aspects of the program will be announced soon. Tickets will be available at Lois's as the dinner begins or may be purchased in advance at the Cocke County Adult Education Center (423) 613-0032. The cost per ticket is $15. Take-out dinners from Lois's buffet will be available for those who wish to support the scholarships but cannot stay for the program. Take-out meals may be purchased beginning at 4:30 p.m. Various door prizes contributed by area businesses and friends of Denton will be awarded during the dinner. The scholarships honor and carry forward the ideals of Denton, late Director of Adult Education for Cocke County Schools, who died in September, 2004, at 57. The Jesse Denton Memorial Scholarships are a charitable, non-profit program, and contributions are tax deductible. Scholarships totaling $6000 have been awarded for three academic school years - two awards of $1000 in May 2005, two more in May 2006, and an award of $1000 plus two for $500 in May 2007. Adult students who complete their high school work through the Cocke County GED program or the Adult High School are eligible to apply. "Let the season begin" will again be the theme for the October 8 dinner. "Jesse was locally famous for a prolonged celebration of his birthday, which was October 10," said Bryan Douglas, who succeeded Denton as Director of Adult Education in Cocke County. "His friends and colleagues took him to a series of birthday lunches and dinners lasting a month or more. So it's especially appropriate that we raise funds to support Jesse's memorial scholarships around the time of his birthday, when he would have been celebrating with us." "In that spirit, we urge Jesse's friends, colleagues, and former students to celebrate with us by attending the dinner and supporting the scholarships in his name. To those who would like to support the scholarships but can't make it to the dinner, contributions will be very welcome, of course," Douglas added. Contributions to the fund's account can be made directly to National Bank of Tennessee, % Jesse Denton Memorial Scholarship Fund, or at the Cocke County Adult Education Program, Dr. Hobart Ford, Sr. Adult Education Center, 241 Hedrick Drive, Newport (423) 613-0032. Information about the program and about applying for scholarships can also be obtained from the Adult Education Center.
