GATLINBURG - A 15-year-old male student at Gatlinburg-Pittman High School was killed early Thursday morning as he was struck by a moving vehicle as he and another student were walking on Jones Cove Road.
According to a report filed by Officer Bob Bundren of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Jesse Shane Norrell of Cosby was walking west bound on Jones Cove Road with 15-year-old Noah Elroy of Gatlinburg, when a 1994 Geo driven by 22-year-old Joshua Stuart of Newport hit Norrell, who was walking in the middle of the road.
He was taken to Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Elroy, also a G-P student, suffered no injuries.
A team of counselors were sent to G-P as well as two other feeder schools to provide grief counseling. Six weeks exams at G-P have been rescheduled for Monday and Tuesday next week.
Don Best, G-P's principal, was understandably grief stricken and said the tragedy has affected the school heavily.
"I've been dealing with a lot of emotions in school today," Best said. "Thank goodness (Director of Schools) Jack (Parton) got us some counselors. They will all be available (today).
"Our staff has been gracious to help out on this whole thing," Best said. "The student body came to me and we had a prayer in a big circle. We were in there for a while holding hands and praying."

Family remembers teen killed in accident as loving, free spirited

Jesse Shane Norrell was a good-natured teenager, family members say, a free spirit who loved music and skateboarding.
"Since he was a baby, he lived off and on with us," Lani Norrell, Jesse's grandmother, said. "He was very loving, fairly quiet and still outgoing. He wasn't a loud, boisterous person. It felt good to be around him."
Norrell died early Thursday morning when he was struck by a moving vehicle as he and another student were walking on Jones Cove Road.
According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol report, Norrell was walking west with 15-year-old Noah Elroy of Gatlinburg when an oncoming vehicle hit Norrell, who officers say was walking in the middle of the road.
He was also a teenager who had endured a lot of tragedy. When he was about 6 years old he lost, in one year, a great-grandfather, a grandfather, a grandmother and an uncle. In 2000 an uncle, Dallas Norrell, was seriously injured in a vehicle accident. Then in 2005 his mother, Carrie, was killed in a multi-car accident in Cosby.
Since his mother's death Norrell, a freshman at Gatlinburg-Pittman High School, wasn't the same kid, according to Cher Matlock, whose daughter is Jesse's half-sister.
"His mother worshipped the ground he walked on," Matlock said. "His whole life changed that day."
Norrell had been living with his aunt, Amanda Ramsey, in Jones Cove.
"He was a free spirit," said Shane Norrell, Jesse's father. "Jesse was a very good kid. He was very giving and a very social kid - he loved to be around other people and those that cared for him.
"Music was his big thing," he continued. "He was in and out of bands. It was probably his stronghold."
"He wasn't really into sports at school," Lani Norrell added. "He loved to skateboard and to go swimming, but he was involved in music more than anything."
A team of counselors was sent to G-P as well as two other feeder schools to provide grief counseling, which continued Friday.
Shane Norrell said his son's classmates placed more than 200 notes on his locker Friday. Family members came to G-P to express their appreciation to the students for their thoughtfulness.
Services will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at Rawlings Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service.
Jesse's wishes were to be cremated and buried with his mother in the Whitted Family Cemetery.
