GLADYS LOY PLUMMER, EX-KNOXVILLIAN, IS BURIED IN HOUSTON
Gladys Loy Plummer, 83, the former Gladys Loy of Knoxville, was buried Tuesday in Houston, where she has made her home since the 1950s
She was the widow of James S. Plummer, who served in Gov. Gordon Browning's administration and was head of Reconstructive Finance during Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration.
Gladys Loy was a pioneer long distance operator for Southern Bell Telephone Co. when it was located on Hemlock and Walnut in Knoxville. She met her husband after he became attracted to her beautiful speaking voice and sought her out.
The couple opened the Minit Man Washes in Houston in 1953, and she worked in management and public relations for the company.
A devoted mother and grandmother, she often took time to help others with their problems.
She continued to come back to Knoxville each year and always made a trip to the Smokies.
She wrote a column for the Pine Forest Country Club newsletter. Her last column, "Walking Down Memory Lane," was published in October. She was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club in Houston.
She is survided in Knoxville by two sisters, Willie Lea Cooper and Ruth Love and brother-in-law Jewell Love. In Houston, she is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Jaynice and Jack Caskey and Brenda and Johnny Templeton; by nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and by a sister-in-law, Gertrude Yount, formerly of Knoxville.
