Faked Injury To Get Care In Hospital
The name of Edward Firestine was added to the list of those who fake injuries and obtain police and hospital care and assistance for short periods after "Laurence Duval," who was picked up on Westminster street between Ward and Wachusett streets, Saturday night, apparently with a broken neck, was found to be uninjured.
He was in district court today charged with vagrancy as a result of his trick and the complaint was continued by Judge T. F. Gallagher until next Monday for disposition. In the meantime the police will endeavor to get in touch with relatives and look into his history.
The police believe that Firestine, who is 23 years old, was injured in an automobile accident in Kansas City, Mo., two or three years ago and that since then he has been in court or hospitals in Portland, Me., Ulica, N. Y. Last Saturday he was released on probation in Salem afer being picked up as a vagrant in Amesbury March 20.
Police of this city, as well as the state police of Massachusetts and New York, united in an effort to locate friends or relatives of "Lawrence Duval" Saturday night and Sunday but this morning he admitted to Lieut W. W. Wallace that
his story told Saturday, night was false.
Firestine is in a class by himself for sheer imagination and romantic stories.
He was apparently unconscious when found by a CCC worker and another man on the sidewalk. They placed a coat under his head and notified the police. Sergt Carlisle F. Taylor was rushed to the scene in the police cruiser and the youth was taken to Burbank hospital. He was apparently unconscious when he reached the hospital but later was able to talk.
He told the police and hospital officials that he had slipped off the curbing, felt a sharp pain in his neck and head and then lost consciousness until he woke up in the hospital. He said he had been workng in Providence and was on his way to Utica, N. Y, where he said he worked.
He gave his address as R. F. D. No. 2, Utica, where he said his employer lived. Lieut W. J. Morris got in touch with the state police who notified the New York state police. They reported that there was no such person as Duval or his employer known in Utica and that here was no such address.
Dr. G. P. Norton treated the young man at the hospital today and X-ray pictures indicated an inury to a vertebrae but did not indicate whether it was old or new. He did not have any of the symptoms found in such an accident so the police continued their investigations.
Lieut. W. W. Wallace questioned the youth yesterday and again today and finally the youth changed his story.
His latest and perhaps true version is that he was placed on probation in Salem Saturday after pulling the same stunt in Amesbury and then he told a story of wanderings which started in Kansas City and went through Mid-West and Eastern cities until he landed here.
He said he wore a brace on his neck after the accident but left it in Salem jail as he did not need it any more. Lieut Wallace talked to the keeper of the jail and learned the brace was there. When the youth was placed on probation he promised to get out of the state.
He told the police his parents were dead.
NOTE: It is not yet confirmed that this is the same Edward Firestine. Further research is needed.
