Vergil D. “Sug” O’Dell, age 93, of Newport, passed away, Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Newport Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Cocke County. Born September 30, 1920 to Charles and Daisy (Ailey) O’Dell and was affectionately known as “Sug” to his family and friends. He was a man of many talents and skills. He graduated from Cocke County High School, retired from Wall Tube and Metals, and was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Newport. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jim, Joy, and Vernon. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Lillian ODean (Ottinger); nieces Jamie Horne (Mark), Anne Beeler (Ed), Jeannie Everhart (Donald); nephews, Jeff Neas (Teresa), Mike Ottinger; several great nieces and nephews, plus numerous friends. The family expresses sincere appreciation for the faithful attention of Sug’s caregivers. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made the First United Methodist Church, 212 Washington Ave., Newport, TN 37821. Graveside services will be held 2:00 pm Monday, July 28, 2014 in Union Cemetery, with Dr. James Bennington and Rev. Marta Cogburn officiating.
