Dr. Vernon W. “Doc” Montsinger, Jr., age 75, of Knoxville, died November 10, at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice, in Halls, after a brief bout with liver cancer.
Born in Newport, Tennessee, August 29, 1925, to Dr. V. W. Montsinger, Sr. and Alma Ailey, he graduated from Cocke County High School, Tusculum College, in Greeneville, Tennessee, and School of Dentistry at University of Louisville, in Kentucky. He was a member of Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity.
Dr. Montsinger began his dental practice with his father, in Newport, in 1948.
He was a Captain in the US Air Force being honorably discharged in 1952.
He moved his practice to Knoxville in 1962, and to Maynardville, Tennessee in 1968. “Doc” retired from dentistry in 1990, and worked part-time at Kroger, in Fountain City, until 1998. He is remembered by many through his dental practice and was known for his kind-heartedness to others and his fun-loving personality.
He is survived by three sons and their families: Mark Montsinger, of Winfield, Illinois; Lawrence Montsinger, of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Vincent Montsinger, of Knoxville, Tennessee; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Porter Fort, of Jefferson City.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 18, at Mynatt Funeral Home Chapel. Inurnment will be at Union Cemetery in Newport, Tennessee at 12:30 p.m. The family will receive friends 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mynatt’s.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions, in memory of Vernon W. Montsinger, Jr., to the American Institute for Cancer Research, 1759 R Street NW, Washington, DC 20009.
Mynatt Funeral Home, Knoxville, is in charge of arrangements.
