(January 10, 1932 - November 14, 2013)
U.S. Veteran Lloyd Scott (L.S.) Wood, age 81, of Newport went to his heavenly home on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013 after a brief illness. His belief in God carried him through a lifetime of service to God, his family, his community, his country, and his church as long as his health allowed. He retired from American Enka/BASF after 45 years, and served in the United States Army. He was a faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Newport Rescue Squad serving as Chaplain, and took great pride in his service to his community. He was preceded in death by his parents, Scott Boyer Wood and Lucy Turner Wood, sister Colleen Wood Ball, nephew Scott Ball and great niece Crystal Bishop. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Eudena Phillips Wood, daughter Cheri Wood Sutton, grandchildren Jeremy Scott and wife LeAnn Sutton and Amanda Sutton Carver, and great-grandchildren Chezni Nicole Carver, Brayden Scott Davis Sutton, Aubri Dean Carver, and soon-to-be-born Jackson Sutton, sisters and brother-in-laws Wanda Holt (PT), Shirley Shelton (James), Peggy Kilgore (Harold), and Barbara Welch (Don), nieces and nephews Karen Holt Medley, Jeff Holt, Sandra Ball Wilmore, Melanie Kilgore James, Melinda Kilgore, David Shelton, Tom Shelton, Julie Shelton Derigo, and Kellie Welch Culp, and special cousin Charles Brooks and wife Fran. He also leaves behind a host of special caretakers and friends at Jefferson County Nursing Home. We cannot begin to express our gratitude to Joie, Julie, Desiree, Allison, Marie, Rick, and the many other staff there who went above and beyond to make his life more enjoyable. The family will be receiving friends from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17 at Manes Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, with burial following at Union Cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Newport Rescue Squad. Rev. Fred Cagle and Rev. Ransom Hall officiating. Family and friends may sign guest registry online at www.manesfuneralhome.com. Manes Funeral Home is in charge.
