Eva Kilgore Smith surprised with 90th birthday celebration
When Eva Smith left home Sunday, she knew she was going to a surprise birthday party. Little did she know that she was the honoree.
Her family had told her the party was for Jerry McMillan, but when she arrived at the Parrottsville United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, the more than 150 guests were there to celebrate the popular Parrottsville lady's 90th birthday, just a few days early. Her actual birthday is December 19.
Hosted by her children, Leon Smith of Parrottsville, Gail Smith Teague of Newport, and Hilda Smith Wheeler of Geneva, Florida, the gala event brought together five generations of the family of the late Charlie and Letha (Ottinger) Kilgore, Eva's parents.
Such celebrations aren't uncommon in the Kilgore family. Eva's father died in 1980 at age 86.
Her mother, Letha (Ottinger) Kilgore was 108 years old at the time of her death, the oldest living person in Cocke County at the time.
Sister Mary (Kilgore) Owenby is 90-plus, while the next sister Sible (Kilgore) France is closing in on 90 herself.
All prettied up in a stylish gray pantsuit with silver and black accessories, the birthday lady greeted both kinfolks and friends from near and far.
Well-known for her expert quilting with the Cocke County Senior Citizens Quilters, the honoree is the widow of the late Lancaster Smith.
In addition to the children at Sunday's party, she is also the mother of the late Norman Smith.
Special guests at the event included her four living siblings: Mary (Kilgore) Owenby, Sible (Kilgore) France, Irene (Kilgore) Woods, and Jimmy Kilgore.
She had three additional sisters, the late Louise (Kilgore) Franklin, the late Ellen (Kilgore) Overton, and the late Blanche (Kilgore) Moore.
