James Donald "Don" Hanauer, 82, of Atascadero died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, in San Luis Obispo.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Atascadero United Methodist Church.
Mr. Hanauer was born June 20, 1919, in Chicago, Ill. He attended Rochester University, New York University and Northwestern University in Illinois. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a second lieutenant pilot of a B-25 twin engine bomber. He returned to his position in sales for the Masonite Corp. after the war and transferred to Los Angeles in 1951 as Masonite's western industrial sales manager. In 1960 he became the assistant general manager for economic development with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, where in 1968 he became the executive vice president and general manager until his retirement in 1983.
Mr. Hanauer worked for the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee in 1984 and moved to Atascadero in 1985, working with the Atascadero Planning Commission for several years and writing a financial column for the Santa Lucia Bank. He was a longtime member of the Los Angeles and Atascadero Rotary clubs. He loved music and was an avid big-band drummer.
Mr. Hanauer is survived by his wife of 57 years, Madeleine; sons, Terry Hanauer and wife Betty of Forks of Salmon, Jack Hanauer and wife Kathy of Paso Robles and Todd Hanauer of Atascadero; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
