SMITH, ANNE LEE SPRINKLE - age 86 of Knoxville, TN passed away Sunday, March 18, 2007. Born in New Castle, NC she was the daughter of William J. Sprinkle and Augusta Coleman Sprinkle Spaugh. Formerly of Winston-Salem, NC her Sprinkle-Spaugh families were among the early Moravian settlers to arrive in the mid 1700's and became leaders of the Moravian Community that became known as Salem. She was proud of her Moravian background and cherished it throughout her life. Mrs. Smith graduated from Gray High School, Winston-Salem and began working for radio station WSJS/Winston-Salem Journal and Sentinel in the programming department. She was a popular NC beauty and participated with movie star John Payne in the opening of the NC Tobacco Festival and many other stars in NC events. As a Knoxville resident, along with her husband of 53 years James Robert Smith, she was well known for wearing lovely large hats with great flair. Upon arriving in Knoxville, Mrs. Smith worked for the Knoxville Journal and later for Roddy Coca-Cola Bottling Company, serving 43 years as assistant to the late Mr. J.P. Roddy, Jr. Active in the Dogwood Arts Festival, beginning in the 1950's, on trails and then as overall chairman of the Garden By-Ways. She was elected to the first Board of Directors and served two years as recording secretary. As an active member of her community, she was involved in a number of historical associations including the East Tennessee Historical Society where she served four years as recording secretary, Board Member of historic Ramsey House, A.P.T.A, where she was on the Board of Governors, Knoxville, Chapter, and was coordinator for the National Historic Preservation Week, past Board Member of Governor John Sevier Memorial Association, Past President of the Knoxville Chapter Professional Secretaries International, Past Officer of the Opti-Mrs. Optimist Club of South Knoxville, member of Old Salem, Inc. and Wachovia Historical Society, NC. She and her husband were early members of the Lake Forest Presbyterian Church when it was founded and served several years a Kindergarten Teacher. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Smith; brothers William J. Sprinkle, Jr. and Thomas M. Sprinkle. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Ginger Dianne Smith Wise and Oscar Bascum Wise, II; granddaughter and husband Lea Christian Wise Primm and Clint McDaniel Primm; great granddaughter Hunter Atchley Primm of Knoxville; sister Kathleen Greenwood of Winston-Salem, NC.; many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Graveside inurnment services will be conducted Monday, March 26, 2007, 1:00 p.m., at Woodlawn Cemetery, 4500 Woodlawn Pike, Knoxville, TN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dogwood Arts Festival, 106 W. Summit Hill Drive, Knoxville, TN 37902 or Ramsey House Plantation, 2614 Thorn Grove Pike, Knoxville, TN 37914.
