Motorists in the City of Newport can look forward to a great host of colorful flowers again thanks to an ongoing program started years ago by a former alderman.
Colorful purple petunias will again cascade from more than 100 large baskets along the rails of the two city bridges crossing the Pigeon River. The bedding plants were put into baskets by the City's Parks & Recreation Dept. employees.
But Faye Fish, former alderman, with Modern Woodmen of America gets credit for starting the beautification project years ago. At that time aldermen were paid $300 per meeting. She decided to take all the money, $3,600, and buy baskets and flowers for the city.
Although she is not a city official today, she continues providing dozens of flats of petunias through Modern Woodmen of America.
City Mayor Connie Ball along with Parks & Recreation Director Tim Dockery met at McSween Bridge on Tuesday to make the spring planting official. There are about 54 baskets on this one bridge.
All the flowers around town on light poles from hanging baskets, and in large containers are also provided by Fish and Modern Woodmen, said Dockery, who thanked her and the mayor for the beautification effort.
Last year, the Parks & Recreation Dept. also installed a water system so it now takes minutes to water all the plants rather than many tedious hours by workers using truck and pump with tank.
Water lines with taps to each basket are in place along the concrete outside rails. Dockery said the workers just hook up the hose to the line and water all plants in a few minutes.
The beautification builds pride, attracts tourists, and makes the city look better, said Mayor Ball, who thanked Fish, Dockery, city workers for their team effort.

Parents, support your child’s school in a positive way. School staff should always do their job professionally and set the model example. Treat all students and their parents with high respect. Support school administration. Work together as a team to accomplish high goals.”
