Grocery stores also tend to do better than many retailers during hard times. In the Northport section of the city your will find that both Knowles Market and City Park Grocery have weathered recessions selling good tasting hot dogs and basic necessities. Jerry Ramsey at City Park Grocery offers a little more than food. The store is packed with old photos, Life magazine covers, nostalgic bits and pieces of the past. I saw some small, yellowed photos of a man operating a bulldozer and asked if he was Jerry's Dad. Yes, Lawrence Ramsey was and had died in a tragic construction accident when he worked for Shan Bush. Jerry said he was 13 at the time and his brother-in-law, Delmar Shults, handled the emergency call as a medical technician. Jerry said he has won a few arguments on the upper speed limit of I-40 by showing off the cover of a 1967 Newport Industry Story booklet. When the discussion comes up about the speed limit Jerry reminds customers it used to be 75 mph. They doubt this until he shows the photo of I-40 made in 1967 with the 75 mph speed limit sign in the background. Jerry hasn't noticed the recession much and keeps on serving up good food in much the same way with the same reliable equipment he's used for years.
