Stokely shares thoughts on mother's career; reads from his upcoming novel

Newport native Jim Stokely was the featured author at Hot Springs Library's program on Friday, June 9.

HOT SPRINGS, NORTH CAROLINA-Newport native Jim Stokely, son of writers James R. Stokely and Wilma Dykeman, shared thoughts on his mother's career and read excerpts from his own upcoming novel on Friday evening at the Hot Springs Visitor Center.
The program, hosted by Friends of the Hot Springs Library, features local authors, according to Mike Lassiter, chairman of the group, who introduced Stokely.
Stokely, who grew up in Newport and attended Newport Grammar School, recently retired from a career in business. He and his wife, the former Anne Callison of Asheville, have since relocated from their home in Boston to Weaverville, North Carolina.
Stokely devoted the first half of his program to the career of his mother, well-known author Wilma Dykeman, who "divided her time between two stomping grounds-Asheville and Newport."
"We are working to keep her legacy alive," said Stokely, as he narrated a PowerPoint presentation about his mother's life and career.
"Recently I presented this program in Asheville," said Stokely, "and only five people in the audience knew who she was."
