Bonnie Cole Dykeman of Asheville, N.C., died Sunday morning at age 95.
Mrs. Dykeman was the mother of noted Tennessee historian and News-Sentinel columnist Wilma Dykeman Stokely.
She grew up in western North Carolina in a family that included well-known ministers and educators. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard J. Dykeman.
Mrs. Dykeman, daughter of Loretta Ballard and William A. Cole, was born at(Barnardsville, near Asheville. She was a dedicated homemaker and involved citizen.
She was a founder of the Beaverdam Valley Garden Club, a member of the Colonial Literary Club and until recently an active participant in church and school activities.
During World War II she was in Washington, D.C., where she served in the Signal Corps.
In later years she often traveled with her daughter on research and lecture engagements. Wilma Dykeman's novel, "The Tall Woman," is dedicated to Bonnie Cole Dykeman, "the tallest woman I know," and the title comes from a mountain saying, "A tall woman casts a long shadow."
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Beaverdam!Baptist Church in Asheville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Monday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Berea College in Berea, Ky.
