Deceased Name: MARY LOU LOVE DOCKERY, RETIRED TEACHER FROM SEVIER, DIES AT 84
Mary Lou Love Dockery, a retired teacher from Sevierville, died early Sunday of complications from a series of strokes. She was 84.
Mrs. Dockery died at Knoxville Convalescent Center. She was the widow of Joe W. Dockery, who was also a longtime teacher and formerly a public official in Sevierville and Sevier County.
A graduate of Carson-Newman College, Mrs. Dockery began her teaching career in schools in Jefferson County, including elementary schools at Parrots,(Chestnut Hill and Mount Horeb, where a generation of students knew her as "Miss Love."
After her marriage, she taught in Sevier County elementary schools in Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. She taught one year at Laurel Lick, one of the last one-teacher schools in the county. She was a public school teacher for 33 years.
During World War II, Mrs. Dockery also was a summer clerical worker on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge that produced the first atomic bomb.
Mrs. Dockery is survived by two sons - Bill, assistant editorial page(editor and editorial writer for The News-Sentinel, and Mike, a commercial construction contractor of Sevierville - and three sisters - Mrs. Olin(Dolles) Warren and Mrs. Curtis (Nina) Bettis of Jefferson City and Mrs.!Benson (Boodie) Garrett of Oak Ridge - as well as sister-in-law Mrs. Palmer (Clarcie) Love of Jefferson City.
Services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Farrar's Funeral Home in Jefferson City, followed by burial at Mount Horeb Cemetery in Jefferson County. Dr. M.B.!Fletcher will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. till 9 p.m. Tuesday at Farrar's.
Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to a scholarship fund in her honor at Carson-Newman College.
