Vivian Miller (Mrs. T.J.) Stafford passed away early Tuesday morning at her home in Maryville. Mrs. Stafford was co-owner of Miller Funeral Home in Maryville and was the daughter of W.R.(Bill) Miller, the founder of the funeral home. Mr. Miller preceded her in death in 1963. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Veva Miller, in 1981, and her husband Thomas J. (T.J.) Stafford, Jr. in 1974.
Vivian had long standing connections in Sevierville, Jefferson City, and Knoxville since the 1920's.
She was born in Alamo, Tennessee in 1920 and moved to Sevierville in 1928 where her father, W.R. Miller, worked at Rawlings Funeral Home and Furniture store for eight years.
Upon graduation from Sevier County High School, Vivian entered Tusculum College while her father moved to Maryville and founded Miller Funeral Home in 1941.
Vivian married T.J. Stafford, Jr. of Sevierville in 1942 and was a proud Navy wife until the end of 1942 while her husband served on a destroyer escort throughout the Pacific. At war's end T.J. Stafford became assistant football coach at Carson-Newman College and was promoted to head football coach in 1948. Vivian was very active with the Carson-Newman faculty and student body. The family moved to Maryville in 1951 where her husband went into business with her father, W.R. Miller, at Miller Funeral Home.
Vivian loved hiking in the Smokies, gardening, and traveling; especially to Ireland, England, and Costa Rica. She is survived by her daughters, Jan (Dr. John) Thompson of Gallatin, Tennessee and Rebecca Stafford of Gallatin; sons, T.J. (Jarue) Stafford, III of Farragut and Kent Stafford of Maryville, grandchildren T.J. (Jennifer) Stafford IV, Virginia (Steven) Hile, Shelley (Clay) Massey, Amanda Thompson, Lauren (Hans) Schmitt-Matzen, Hayley Thompson, and Abby Thompson; and ten great-grandchildren.
