VINSON, MARY ELIZABETH HOLDER - age 85 of Newport, passed away, on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at the Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. "Mert" was born the youngest of four children on December 23, 1925. She was a lifelong resident of Newport, with her beloved husband of 67 years, Dub Vinson. She was a devoted member of Southside Baptist Church where she taught children's Sunday School and Training Union for sixty years and directed Bible Drill. She worked for 23 years at Electro-Voice, was a director of the Red Cross, and spent her retirement years volunteering for Smoky Mountain Home Health & Hospice with her husband. In 2005, she received the Presidential Call to Service award from President Bush for completing 4,000+ hours of community service. Most importantly, she was assured of her eternal salvation due to claiming "Victory in Jesus". Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Edwin and Mae Sexton Holder, beloved older brothers, Ed and Jim Holder and older sister, Thelma Kate Holder, and is survived by her loving husband, W.C. Vinson of Newport, children Carwin (and Eugene) Dunn of Kodak, Bill (and Dotty) Vinson of Knoxville, and Jim (and Lee Ann) Vinson of Knoxville, grandchildren Chandler Vinson of Rutledge, Eric Vinson of Knoxville, and Lauren Vinson Thorson of Phoenix, Arizona, and great grandson Weston Vinson of Knoxville. A graveside service will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Union Cemetery with Dr. Charlie Boggan and Rev. Chandler Vinson officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 10:30 - 11 a.m. at the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeff Stooksberry, Jamison Pack, Dan Hammond, Clint Hammond, Tim Williams, Dan Williams, Scottie Hartsell, and Jonathan Moyers. Honorary pallbearers are Hop Byrd, Wilbur Mathes, Keith Moyers, Matthew Hill, Don Meredith, Roy Cobble, M.E. Edwards, and Rusty Denton. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Southside Baptist Church, P.O. Box 668, Newport, TN 37822 or to Smoky Mountain Home Health & Hospice, 222 Heritage Boulevard, Newport, TN 37821.
