NEWPORT-Newport native Dr. Robert M. Kisabeth, Jr. and the late James (Jay) Gaddis) were lauded Thursday evening as recipients of the Cocke County Education Foundation's 2012 Celebrate Our Success honorees at the Foundation's annual banquet at Carson Springs Conference Center.
Kisabeth, now a resident of Charleston, South Carolina, is an internationally known pathologist whose work has taken him to numerous countries to help establish laboratories and medical programs. He has also served on the staff of both Mayo and Cleveland Clinics.
Gaddis spent over 40 years in the education field, mostly as an administrator. After leaving his teaching position at Newport Grammar School, Gaddis moved to Morristown where he later retired as Superintendent of Schools.
He then returned to Newport and served his last years as Director of the Newport City School System.
In introducing the recipients, Dr. Rich Lloyd, who chairs the Foundation, said, "We are here to promote the value of education in Cocke County-to promote the value of things that are good."

U.S. Veteran James H. (Jay) Gaddis, Jr., age 81, of Newport, passed away, Saturday, June 11, 2011. Jay was a member of Fellowship Presbyterian Church. He served as a Lay Speaker for the United Methodist Church for many years. Mr. Gaddis was an educator for 48 years. He was Superintendent of Morristown City and Newport Grammar School for 27 of those years. Jay was a devoted member of the Gideons International and spoke frequently for the Gideons. He was a long-time member of the Newport Kiwanis. He was a veteran of the U S Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, James H. Gaddis Sr. and Ida Maddron Gaddis and granddaughter, Kristen Moore. He is survived by his wife, Eva Gaddis; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Tommy Bible, Karen and Tom Inman; brother, Ray Gaddis and wife Dot of Knoxville; grandchildren, Kari Ann Moore, Jill Jones and husband Ricky, Cierra Inman, Kenzie Inman, and McKinley Bible. Funeral services will be held 8:00 pm, Monday, June 13, 2011 in Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jim Loftis officiating. Burial will be held 10:00 a m, Tuesday, June 14, 2011 in Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm Monday at Manes Funeral Home prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Gideons International, P. O. Jay Gaddis, noted educator and religious leader, dies at 81

NEWPORT-James H. (Jay) Gaddis, Jr., former Superintendent of Morristown City and Newport City Schools, died suddenly Saturday evening of an apparent heart attack. He was 81.
Gaddis, son of the late James H. and Ida (Maddron) Gaddis) was the older of two sons of the couple. A younger brother, Ray, resides in Knoxville. Initially the Gaddis family resided with his grandmother on Prospect Avenue. While living here, he developed a lifelong friendship with the late Roland Dykes, Jr., who later became Newport's Mayor. The family later moved to a home on Lincoln Avenue.
After finishing his elementary education at nearby Newport Grammar School, he entered Cocke County High School where he graduated in the late 1940s. He then earned his bachelor's degree from Emory & Henry College and his master's degree from East Tennessee State University.
He also married the former Eva Kinser in 1954, and the two were preparing to begin teaching at NGS when he received his draft notice from the United States Army.
