- [S24] The Newport Plain Talk, (http://www.newportplaintalk.com), 17 Sep 2006.
The week past was an eventful one in our hometown, enjoying cooler nights, football, and much lower gasoline prices with fall again just over the horizon. It was raining some days ago when we lined up at the office door to get into the Plain Talk. Just shortly after 8 a.m., my friend Jack Barrett, of Del Rio, came in with a younger man. Jack introduced me to his nephew, James Hollis Barrett. They brought in the really big news of the day-a giant tomato that measured 19 inches around. If it had fallen off the vine and hit a groundhog, the blow could have killed it. I had not met Hollis before and learned he is disabled as a relatively young man. He suffered several heart attacks. For more than 20 years he served in the military, Army, four tours in Germany, and retired. Jack, 75, said he has never had a heart attack but did undergo bypass surgery years ago. Hollis's father, the late Charlie Barrett, is Jack's brother. Hollis is married to the former Linda Stuart, daughter of the former property assessor, Imogene Stuart. I have heard that eating tomatoes is supposed to be healthy, but Hollis said his doctors advised him not to eat them-but, they are fun to grow.
