HELTON, JESSE EUGENE - age 67, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, July 22, 2002, at Fort Sanders Hospital. He was a very active member of West Anderson Avenue Church of God, and enjoyed church and especially his Sunday School Class. Jesse was previously employed at Allied Structural Steel Company in Clinton for 26 years, where he was an Overhead Crane Operator. After the plant closed, he later went to work for Knoxville Community Development Corporation, where he was a Maintenance Man and later a Foreman. In 1993, while at K.C.D.C., he had surgery for lung cancer and was able to do light work for another year. In 1995, he had kidney failure and went on Dialysis and had to retire. Due to his wife becoming ill with kidney failure and later going on Dialysis, Jesse became a patient at NHC Fort Sanders Nursing Home in January 2001. The family would like to thank all of the people there for the care they gave him, and to all of the nurses and staff at East Knoxville Dialysis Clinic, as well as all of the nurses and staff on 3 West at Fort Sanders Hospital. He was a Mason and before becoming ill, he attended Charles H. McKinney Lodge #433 F&AM. He was an avid "Big Game & Fish Sportsman" and always enjoyed talking about his hunting trips with his buddies and about the deer he killed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andy Jackson and Lucy Mae Welch Helton, and a brother, Marshall L. Helton. He is survived by his faithful and devoted wife of 44 years, Velma Jean (Dunn) Helton very faithful devoted son and daughter-in-law, Dan Helton, Sr. and Charlene of Farragut very faithful and devoted grandson, James Daniel Helton, Jr. (Little Dan) of Maryville his very devoted and faithful niece, Sherryl Darlene Dunn, who lived in the home and took care of Jesse and Velma three faithful and devoted brothers, Rev. Reubel R. Helton and wife, Vina, of Jellico, Rev. Howard E. Helton, Sr. and wife, Louise, of Sevierville, and Wayne E. Helton of Knoxville one faithful and devoted sister, Juanita Helton Vail of Knoxville, as well as several nieces and nephews who were very faithful and devoted to him special hunting and fishing buddies, Robert Jacob, Jack Dowling, Mike Mingie, Willard Campbell and Rev. James Shown. The funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at West Anderson Avenue Church of God with Rev. James E. Dunn, Sr. officiating. Music will be by Jim Duncan. The body will lie in state at the church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. before services. Interment will be in Bookwalter Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rev. Chester Hodsden, III, Sonny Helton, Jerry Claibourne, Roger Brumitte, John Dunn and Steve Hall, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers will be Rev. Troy Baird, Rev. Robert Sprague, Rev. Harvey Brown, Rev. George Bryant, Jesse Riggs, Glen Collins, Sr., Griff Webb and Rev. Jr. Collins. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.
