KNOXVILLE- Several hundred veterans and family members, as well as federal, state, and local officials braved chilly temperatures on Tuesday afternoon to attend the official ribbon cutting for the Sen. Ben Atchley State Veterans home in Knox County. The $18 million facility is located near West Bridge Business Park, Knox County, and will provide services to East Tennessee veterans. Construction of the 140-bed facility has resulted in the creation of 180 new jobs for Knox County. Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale emceed the event that included music by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra Ensemble, the National Anthem sung by Greene County High School Senior Chris Jennings, remarks by U.S. Rep. John Duncan Jr., Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen, and Commissioner of Veteran Affairs John Keys, and the singing of "God Bless America" by soloist Derrick Ellis. Congressman Duncan cited the great cooperation between various levels of government and the efforts of veterans' organizations to bring this project to a successful conclusion. He singled out Sen. Ben Atchley and Cocke County Del Rio native Gerald D. Clarke, commander of the United Veterans of East Tennessee, for their tireless efforts. Gov. Bredesen commented that when told that the project was initially rejected due to empty beds in Middle and West Tennessee veterans' facilities, he stated, "That's fine, but veterans want to be near their families. This facility is one way state government can do right by our veterans". A highlight of the ceremony was a presentation by Cocke County businessman and Amvets Life Member William L. Green, executive director of Tennessee Amvets, to Grover Poteet, chairman of the Tennessee State Veterans Home Board. Green presented the keys to a Ford F350 one-ton handicapped accessible van that is being donated to the Atchley Veterans Home by the Amvets Service Foundation. The van is equipped with a lift mechanism, and can simultaneously transport three wheel chair bound patients. That presentation was followed by an announcement by Mayor Ragsdale that Knox County was providing the veterans home with a twenty-five-passenger bus. The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting by Sen. Atchley, Gov. Bredesen, and other dignitaries.
