John W. Rogers Jr., age 87, of Knoxville passed away Tuesday evening, June 29, 2010. John was a member, Deacon and Trustee of Belmont Heights Baptist Church. He did volunteer work at the Baptist Center. John was a veteran of World War II and participated in the Normandy invasion of France. He had three campaign ribbons while serving with the Army Amphibious Engineers. John was preceded in death by his sister, Lucy Simmons. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nadine Hayes Rogers; daughter and son-in-law, Linda Gail and Johnny Moore of Sharpsburg, GA; grandchildren, Johnny Wayne Moore Jr. and wife Tammy, Cynthia Ann Prophitt and husband Stan, Scott Moore and wife Cathy; great grandchildren, Kayla Moore, Drake and Zackary Prophitt; sisters, Kathleen DeFord of Knoxville and June McGaffee of Louisville, KY; brother Gatha Rogers; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Donnie Whaley. Family and friends will gather at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the East Tennessee State Veterans’ Cemetery for graveside services with full military honors conferred by the East Tennessee Veteran’s Honor Guard.
