Isham Ownby Turbyville obituary

Leo L. Ownby, retired auctioneer and part owner and vice president of W. Hugh Ownby Auction and Realty Co., died of cancer Friday in a local nursing home. He was 76 and lived in Richmond.
Mr. Ownby came to Richmond in 1945 to work as an auctioneer for Richmond Livestock Co. and for W. Hugh Ownby Auction and Realty Co., his older brother's business.
Mr. Ownby worked for Richmond Livestock, which sold cattle for farmers, for about 30 years, until the stockyard closed.
He became a part-owner in Ownby Auction and Realty Co., which handled livestock and real estate for farmers, and served as vice president for about the last 10 years. Mr. Ownby became ill three years ago and retired about a year ago.
Mr. Ownby also had owned and operated several livestock markets, including some in Richmond, Fredericksburg, Goochland, Louisa, Norfolk, the Roanoke- Hollins area and Saluda.
A Sevier County, Tenn., native, he grew up in Knoxville, Tenn. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army for 34 months in the South Pacific theater, mostly on Bora Bora.
He was a member of River Road Church, Baptist, where he was on the deacons board and had served on various committees.
Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, Elizabeth Taylor Ownby; a brother, W. Hugh Ownby of Richmond; a half-brother, J.L. Janeway of Concord, Tenn.; four sisters, Isham Turbyville, Ruby Brock and Mary Atkins, all of Knoxville, Tenn., and Sue Fontana of Oak Ridge, Tenn.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at River Road Church, Baptist, River and Ridge roads. Burial will be in Westhampton Memorial Park.
The family suggests that memorial gifts be made to Old Dominion Hospice Family Care, 1401 Johnston-Willis Drive, Richmond, Va., or to River Road Church, Baptist, 8000 River Road, Richmond, Va. 23229-8415.
