SHEPHERD, KELLY G. - age 87 of Athens, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday morning, August 16, 2006. A native of LaFollette, TN and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Harve and Linda Ford Shepherd. Preceded in death by: parents; five brothers, Troy, Luther, Ancil, Adie, infant brother, Jessie Shepherd; four sisters, Texie Trotter, Eunice Sharp, Catherine Shepherd, infant sister, Gracie Shepherd. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army during WWII, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge. A lifetime Mason with the Meridian Sun Lodge #50, he was a member of Alhambra Shrine Temple in Chattanooga and a member of VFW #5146, where he served as Past-Post Commander. In 1948, he started the Kelly Shepherd & Sons Oil Co. Inc. He served on numerous committees, including: Past President of Green Cove Lodge in Tellico, Former Chairman of McMinn County Council in the 1970's, Board of Directors at Woods Hospital, and also served with the Board of Directors at Citizens Bank. He enjoyed farming, was an avid sportsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting and baseball. In his younger days, while living in Kansas, he played on several baseball teams in the Independent League. Survivors include: his wife of 56 years, Betty Rodgers Shepherd of Athens; daughters, Patsy Arnett and Susie Shepherd-Malone, both of Athens; sons, Herbert, Jim and Kelly "Kid" Shepherd, all of Athens; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 am Friday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Thomas officiating. Burial will be in McMinn Memory Gardens with Full Military Honors. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm Thursday at the funeral home with a Masonic Service at 8 pm.
