WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said today that his 22-year-old daughter is doing "remarkably well" following her carjacking Wednesday night in downtown Washington, D.C.
Julia Corker was thrown from a Chevrolet Tahoe near the Verizon Center but did not sustain any serious injuries. She was later able to identify suspects arrested in suburban Maryland.
"She's sore, and it's obviously shaken her up, and she's still dealing with police officials here from the area, but you know, Elizabeth and I both are just glad that she's safe," Corker said.
"It happened just half a block from our apartment in the Penn Quarter area, which is about nine blocks from the Capitol, an area, you know, it's perceived to be a very safe and well-traveled area.
"But obviously last night she was very shaken up, but she's doing just fine. I very much appreciate people from around the state - and really around the country - all the calls that have come in. She's a brave young woman, and she handled herself well."
Corker praised the police as "incredible."
"We were in an area that's under the D.C. Metro jurisdiction, but the Capitol police also came, the FBI became involved and then the local police in Maryland were incredible, too," the senator said. "All of them were very, very professional. They found the suspects very, very quickly. Julia and I went over late last night, and she identified them."
Todd Womack, Corker's chief of staff, made the following statement earlier today:
"On Wednesday evening around 9:15 p.m., Sen. Corker's daughter, Julia, 22, was involved in a carjacking in Northwest Washington. She was driving to the apartment she shares with her father approximately nine blocks from the Capitol and stopped at an intersection when she was pulled from her vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe, and thrown to the ground. She did not suffer serious injuries.
"She is a bit sore and shaken up but doing well. Sen. Corker was nearby and able to get to the scene of the incident very quickly.
"The perpetrators were caught shortly after, were positively identified, and are in custody in Seat Pleasant, Md.
"Sen. Corker is very grateful that Julia was not seriously injured, that those who committed the crime were quickly apprehended, and he is extremely appreciative to the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, the Capitol Police, the FBI, and the Seat Pleasant Police Department for their quick response and professionalism."
