Josephine "Jo" Smith Early obituary
- [S106] The Mountain Press, 26 Jul 2006.
Lillie Jewell Smith passed away peacefully Saturday July 22, 2006 three days shy of her 89th birthday. Lillie poured nearly nine decades of affection and care into her amazing life. The warm memories she provided her family and many friends will always remain. Born and raised in Somerset, Ky., Lillie graduated from Somerset High School in 1935 and maintained a fondness for her family roots there throughout her life. But it will be difficult to think of Lillie without thinking of her Knoxville lakefront home she cherished for nearly 50 years. In fact, Lillie's home provided a safe haven for her beloved pets and stray animals who did not have a place to call home. If any person or any animal was in need, they could always count on Lillie Jewell. Her many acts of caring and selflessness are the stuff of legend. A dedicated 40 + year employee of Fulton-Bellows in Knoxville, Lillie possessed a terrific work ethic with a caring hand to match. Her taste for gardening was special. Her family and friends enjoyed the taste of her mouthwatering lemon cakes, peanut brittle, and unrivaled red-velvet cakes. Most of all, they enjoyed her warm sense-of-humor and prankster personality.
Preceded in death by her parents John and Laura Smith, sisters Garnett Roach and Jo Early, and very special nephews J.B. Hines and Jim Early. Lillie was a "Jewel" in every sense of the word. She was considered a "Mom" to many including the family she leaves behind: great niece Jama Early Wall and family, great nephews Chris Early and family, Steve Early, nieces Judy Malone and family, Suzi Hatcher and family, Dena Early, and Barbara Hines and family.
The family owes a tremendous amount of gratitude to Lillie's long-time friends and neighbors, Mrs. Emily Anne Oakley and Ms. Judy Richards in addition to the incomparable care-giver Mrs. Parivash Henley and staff.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 25 at Stevens Chapel with The Rev. Dr. Albert E. Pierson officiating. The family and friends will meet 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 26 at Somerset Cemetery in Somerset, Ky. for graveside services and interment at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 25 at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at Broadway. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley, P.O. Box 9479, Knoxville, TN 37940.
