Last week, Jim "Chopper" Phillips of WNPC Radio called and asked me to help get the word out about the station's 30th anniversary. Where has the time gone so fast? I remember when Wayne Harris opened the station and Ray Sander come into Newport. He has kept us on our toes in news gathering and is one of the finest radio news directors in the area market. You will be reading more about WNPC next week. When I stopped by, Tommy Bullard was there talking to Lisa Coggins. Tommy, as you know, is the son of Ronnie and Josie Bullard, of Newport. Lisa is working with Tommy on several productions. Actually, she and Tommy are both members of the International Entertainment Buyers Association and he is a member of the Academy of Country Music and The Country Music Association. Tommy had to remind me he worked as a sportswriter with the Plain Talk and as a WLIK announcer in the late 1970s. It was this interest in radio, technical production, and entertainment that led him to his work today with Audio Ethics, as special projects vice-president. For example, this weekend Audio Ethics, of Charlotte, produced the Sat. night concert at Oktoberfest, Dandridge. The concert featured The Little River Band, and local bands Avenue C, Thoroughfare, and Grits. By the way, Lisa is from Hartford, the office manager for WNPC. I'm sure you know her family. Her husband is school board member Richard Coggins and her Dad is Jack Smith, who operates the Fitness Center off Knoxville Hwy. She works with Audio Ethics, as a freelance event and concert producer, when she can squeeze in the time between work and family. Tommy said, "She's very talented and just another positive about Cocke County."

Just Plain Talk - You know her voice
After a week of dry fall afternoons and frosty mornings, the first ones of the year, the weekend weather became unsettled in our hometown, and as I mentioned last week, gasoline prices have tumbled more to below $2.50 per gallon.
We were talking about Tommy Bullard, a Newport native, living in Knoxville, and his sometimes-assistant, Lisa Coggins. I stopped at WNPC Radio again on Friday to talk more with her. Much of the information here comes directly from Tommy. He said, "We (Audio Ethics) handle a wide variety of events from outdoor concerts in Gatlinburg to industry trade shows in London, England. I actually produce about 100 events a year for our company. For instance, one of our clients is the University of South Carolina. We start a 9-month performing arts series with them, including well known groups such as Three Dog Night." Lisa helped at Lancaster, SC, on Sat. with a magic show production.
Bullard has also worked concerts in diverse locations, such as Banner Elk, NC, Kiawah Island, SC, Toronto Canada, and Las Vegas. "Basically, I head up the special projects division for Audio Ethics, Inc. out of Charlotte, NC. We're best known for installation and design of technology systems placed in churches in several countries. By technology I'm specifically referring to audio, theatrical lighting, video, etc. We've completed well over 1800 churches."
Tommy also said that he manages a handful of church installations (currently some in Knoxville, Morristown, New Orleans, and Birmingham), but his primary job is to produce large concerts for clients and to handle "special projects." Most of these are trade shows, such as the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas. He has also coordinated trade shows in Anaheim, CA, Las Vegas, NV, Orlando, FL, Toronto, London, and Amsterdam, Netherlands. "This is a job that's easy to enjoy-meeting different persons and performing artists." Tommy's connection with Lisa goes back to working in the family furniture business. They worked on radio commercials used in advertising. Lisa, office manager at WNPC, still tapes commercials and loves the technical side of production so Tommy recruited her this past Spring to help with the Newport Theatre Guild's production of "My Fair Lady." Tommy said, "Quite honestly I could not have done it without her. In one rehearsal she knew the play, organized our copy of the script with the over-30-speaking parts, and basically kept us on track each night."
WNPC's Jim "Chopper" Phillips, who in my mind is the local celebrity because of his years as a national announcer on the NASCAR circuit with the Motor Racing Network, told me when he first met Lisa, he was not impressed. The story goes that the late Wayne Harris, then station manager, stopped at Krysal's and heard teenaged Lisa's "sexy voice" over the intercom order system and hired her on the spot. Chopper thought he had lost his mind, but trained her and she became an on-air personality, "Nights with Lisa Lisa." She got the name from Bill Beason, former announcer who picked up the name from a musical group. I've know her Dad, Jack Smith at the Fitness Center, for years. Her mother is Ann McMahan Smith, who works at Wal-Mart. Lisa also has a sister, Jacklyn Pack, who has a unique connection to Lisa's husband, Richard Coggins. Many of you know the Coggins families of Hartford. Richard operates a frame and body shop not far from his mother, Vinita Coggins, widow of the late Creed Coggins. The other children are Steve, Angie, and Ronnie. One thing Lisa told me that is sad is that three family members all died in vehicle accidents: Creed and two of his children. Richard married Lisa in 1995, two years later she was station office manager, and they have a daughter, Kinley, age 4. Chopper refers to Lisa as the station's "central nervous system." She is always active that's why she got involved with productions. She worked with Tommy at Banner Elk for the Little River Band appearance. Now, here's the twist: Richard's sister, Angie Pack is married to Marty. They have a son, Blake Pack, who is married to Jacklyn (Smith) Pack, Lisa's sister.
In plain talk, people often confront the 'sound and fury' of life quite successfully.
