Lawrence Hooper Gregg age 99 of Newport passed away January 17, 2010 in Takoma Regional Hospital Greeneville Tennessee. He was of Baptist faith. He became interested in cars as a teenager and purchased his first car, a 1923 Model T, in 1926. He taught himself how the car worked by disassembling and reassembling the vehicle. He then went to work as a mechanic at the Gateway Garage in the early 1930’s. He worked at other garages until he opened his own garage in the early 1940’s. As a master mechanic, he took pride in the fact that he was able to get a 1940 Ford to race at a speed of 140 mph and a white Chrysler that could make 180 mph. He was a master mechanic who always had a smile on his face and sound advice for anyone who asked. He taught others to be mechanics and how to work on their cars. Lawrence farmed in his spare time, raising tobacco and operating a dairy farm. Lawrence was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt. In the 60’s he co-owned a stock car # 10 that raced at a local speedway. Throughout his life, he loved to read. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Christine Cooper Gregg who passed away on August 18, 2009, parents Walter and Martha Gregg, sons Curtis Carroll Gregg and Michael Lynn Gregg, sisters Blanche Richardson and Rosie Ealy. He is survived by his daughter Karen (Nelson) Parker of Huntsville, Alabama, granddaughter Emily Anne Parker, and grandson Matthew Gregg Parker of Huntsville, Alabama. Surviving children of a previous marriage are Mary Dean (James) Anders, Don Gregg, Shirley Coates all of N.C., sisters Charlsie Gregg, Violet (Stanley) Allison, Ardenas Hayes, all of Newport, several grand, great and great great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday in Manes Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Union Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 5-7 Wednesday prior to the funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stokely Memorial Library.
