Ralph L. Shields transferred to Heaven on July 5, 2009. He was 76 years of age. He was preceded in passing by his parents Sam & Naomi Shields and brother, Kenneth (Jason) Shields. He was a proud veteran of the US Navy, having honorably served both during and after the Korean War. In the early 1960’s, he operated Airport Phillips 66 Service Station. Ralph was retired from the Aluminum Company of America (Tennessee Operations) and a member of the ALCOA 25 Year Club. He enjoyed farming both before and after his retirement from ALCOA. He was a member of Foothills Antique Tractor and Engine Club for a number of years. Ralph was a charter member of the Cades Cove Preservation Association. He often volunteered his time helping his sons and their friends when they were young with Boy Scouts and Little League Baseball activities. Ralph will always be remembered for his good-natured wit and willingness to help others. He is survived by JoAnne Shields, sons, Tim (T.R.) Shields, Trent Shields and wife Terri Shields, grandson, Tanner R. Shields and granddaughter, Tara Ann Shields all of Maryville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Luther (Luke) and Louise Shields of Maryville, Robert (Bob) and Helen Shields of Maryville, Larry and Gladys Shields of Jacksonville, NC; sister, Sue Beals of Greenback; sister & brother-in-law, Joyce and Dean Enos of Greenback. Ralph is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins, along with a large host of friends. Graveside service and Interment will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at Grandview Cemetery with Rev. George Macht officiating. Friends may call at their convenience after 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at Smith Funeral & Cremation Service, Maryville, 865-983-1000.
