Tyler Boyd earns honors in National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest
PARROTTSVILLE - Tyler Lee Boyd, son of David and Deborah Boyd, Parrottsville, recently placed eighth in the National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest, which recognizes Jersey youth from across the country for their leadership activities and participation in Jersey functions, as well as their successes in breeding and managing their own Jersey cattle.
Boyd, a freshman studying biology with an emphasis in genetics at Vanderbilt University, was nominated for the honor by Tennessee's Jersey organization. The competition is open to individuals who were between the ages of 9 and 19 on January 1, 2006, and who owned at least one Registered JerseyTM, or who placed among the top 10 in the previous year's contest.
Cash awards were presented to the top 10 individuals.
Boyd and the other winners will be recognized at the Junior Banquet on November 3, 2007, in Louisville, Kentucky.
Boyd has spent the last 17 years continuing his family's tradition of raising Jerseys on their family farm. During this time, he has learned how to handle media coverage, positive or negative, and has taught other producers how to as well.
His own Registered Jersey herd began when he was just three-weeks old, and now numbers 20 replacement heifers and 23 cows.
Coming from a six-generation family dairy farm, Boyd began working with Jerseys at a young age. Over the years, his responsibilities have grown to include managerial tasks as well as field work. He is responsible for updating test day information, assisting with herd appraisals, and milking full-time during the summers and weekends.
He continues to enjoy selecting show calves and cows, taking full responsibility for breaking them to lead and caring for them. In addition to showing his own Jerseys, Boyd has also worked with two younger 4-H Club members, allowing them to exhibit his animals at local shows to help them gain experience.
This past year he exhibited the Best Bred by Exhibitor cow and High Performance cow at the Tennessee State Junior Jersey Show.
With his growing interest in genetics, Boyd enjoys a sense of pride in "knowing that I have made matings that produced a winner in the ring or in the barn. To walk into that show ring with animals that I bred and trained gives me a feeling that is hard to put into words. Whether I am first, last, or somewhere in between, I strive to give my best."
In addition to his work at Boyd-Lee Jerseys, he is an active member of the Tennessee Jersey Junior Association, serving as president. He has also been named Tennessee Outstanding Junior Jersey Boy three times and was named Tennessee Outstanding Senior Jersey Boy in 2005.
When not farming, Boyd participates in community service activities and is active in his church. He has attended National 4-H Congress in Atlanta where he was a member of the Design Team.
His future goal is to return home following college graduation and develop his family's herd into the leading Jersey herd in Tennessee.
