Authorities have identified a Cosby man killed Saturday afternoon in a crash on Interstate 40 in Sevierville.
According to the Sevierville Police Department, Howard Nathaniel Ownby, 56, was killed in the crash.
Officers reported Ownby was driving a 1996 Dodge van in the right lane of I-40 near mile marker 406 at 2:40 p.m. Saturday when he apparently lost control of the vehicle.
The van he was operating struck a 2005 Ford pickup, driven by Cynthia Thompson, 40, of Cleveland, Tenn., in the rear. After the impact, the van crossed three lanes of traffic and flipped, ending up in the median, police reported. Ownby, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was the van's only occupant. The truck's driver was not injured.
A White Pine woman was killed and two passengers injured in a one-vehicle crash on Highway 113 at 3:37 a.m. Sunday morning.
Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) dispatchers reported Kimberly Michelle Helton, 34, of White Pine, was killed when the vehicle she was driving northbound on Highway 113 crashed.
Authorities reported the vehicle slipped off the edge of the road, Helton then over-corrected, and the vehicle flipped onto its side and slid into a tree. According to dispatchers, Helton was wearing a seatbelt.
There were two passengers in the vehicle.
Mark Eric Briggs, 32, of Morristown, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle, the dispatcher said. He was transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center, authorities reported.
As of Monday afternoon, a UT Medical Center spokesperson said Briggs was in stable condition. No further information on his condition was available at presstime.
A third occupant in the vehicle, Jason N. Puckett, 23, of White Pine, was also injured, according to a dispatcher. However, the dispatcher did not know if Puckett was transported to a hospital.
