Deceased Name: John S. Chesteen, renowned interior designer, gourmet cook
Nationally recognized interior designer John S. Chesteen was one of Greater Cincinnati's most beloved hosts because of his southern charm and culinary talents. Mr. Chesteen, 68, of Covington, died Wednesday at his home. He owned John Chesteen Interior Design Co. in Cincinnati.
Mr. Chesteen was born and reared in Dandridge, Tenn. An Army veteran of World War II, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati's Department of Interior Design, where he later taught as an adjunct professor.
He designed homes for several generations of Greater Cincinnatians, creating the interiors for homes from Indian Hill, Ohio, to Palm Beach, Fla., to Nantucket, Mass. He designed the interior for the Petit St. Vincent Hotel in the West Indies.
Mr. Chesteen was known in some circles as the dean of Cincinnati interior designers.
"He was very influential to me and many other designers," said Ray Laubenthal, associate professor of interior design at the University of Cincinnati. "His style was a combination of contemporary and traditional."
Mr. Chesteen was the youngest Fellow elected to the American Society of Interior Designers and held a variety of offices in the organization's local and national chapters.
He was a member of the national board of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and a member of AIDS Volunteers of Cincinnati. His was a familiar face at galas for the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Museum Center at Union Terminal and other arts institutions in Greater Cincinnati.
Invitations to Mr. Chesteen's parties were coveted.
"He was a renowned gourmet cook," said a friend, Donald Beck, a Cincinnati architect.
"He used to joke that he could give a party for 100 at a drop of a hat and he could," said Beck.
Mr. Chesteen's gastronomical achievements were chronicled in Bon Apetit magazine, whose Great Cook section featured Mr. Chesteen.
His Victorian townhouse on Covington Avenue was a showcase for his design talents. He leaves a sister, Margaret Rule of Dandridge, Tenn. Services are 4 p.m. Tuesday at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church. Arrangements are through Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington. Survivors include a sister, Peggy Rule of Dandridge, Tenn. Services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, Hyde Park, Ohio. Burial will be in the family cemetery in Dandridge, Tenn. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, is in charge of arrangements.
