Dan Metcalf, who resides on Curve Street in Newport, has announced his candidacy for District 6 - Post II (Newport Grammar School and Community Center voting precincts) in the upcoming August election.
Metcalf is a retired business owner and veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps.
He is married to the former Carol McMahan, also a Cocke County native. They have two children, Allison Metcalf Manes, who is married to Eric Manes, and Robert "Bert" Metcalf, all of Newport.
They have two grandsons Bo and Beck, who both attend Newport Grammar School.
Metcalf is the son of Amelia Watts Metcalf and the late Joe Metcalf, both of Cocke County.
He attended Newport Grammar School and graduated from CCHS in 1960. He also attended ETSU where he majored in Business Management.
He was appointed by the Cocke County Commission and served as a Judicial Commissioner. "It has been an honor to serve Cocke County in the past, and I will be honored to serve as a County Commissioner," Metcalf said.
He added, "There are three fundamentals that we must always keep in mind: keep taxes low, budgets reasonable, and always keep the taxpayers in mind when making decisions."
Metcalf believes his years of experience in business will help him, as a commissioner, to manage and maintain budgets and give input on the county's daily operations.
He said, "I look forward to serving with our new County Mayor and County Commission to keep all costs as low as possible and help move Cocke County forward with new job growth, so that everyone can be proud to call Cocke County home.
"I have enjoyed getting out and meeting most of the folks in the 6th district, and I have heard and understand your concerns and appreciate your time and support. I am sure there are folks I will not have the pleasure of meeting prior to the election; however, I would like to take this time to humbly ask for your vote and support for County Commissioner 6th District-Post II."
