Jan Brockwell candidate for Cocke County Clerk
NEWPORT—Jan Brockwell is a candidate for the office of Cocke County Clerk in the upcoming prmary election next May.
Brockwell, who has served as current Cocke County Clerk Janice Butler’s chief deputy for 13 years, has been employed in the office since 1994. Butler recently announced her decision to retire at the end of her current term.
Brockwell’s work in the office started when she was hired part-time by then County Clerk Don Boley, who served in that capacity from 1974-1994. After a few months, she was elevated to the postion of Deputy Clerk, a job she held seven years. During that time, she worked in nearly every aspect of the office’s scope. She currently holds the distinction of having worked in the clerk’s office longer than any of its employees.
For the past 13 years, under the guidance of Butler, she has served as Chief Deputy.
In seeking election in the May, 2014 primary election, Brockwll says her plans are simple. “I’ll always try to improve the office,” said Brockwell, “and make a smooth transition at work by retaining all current employees. My Jan Brockwell candidate for Cocke County Clerk emphasis will be on customer service.
“All people should be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect,” she continued, “and I promise to continue my policy of doing just that.”
She has been married to retired businessman Terry Brockwell for 42 years. They have one daughter, Amy Swaffer, an RN at UT Hospital in Knoxville. Amy’s husband, Steve, is an EMT. The Swaffers have two children, Wesley, 11, and Morgan, 6, both Newport Grammar School students.
The candidate is the daughter of the late Virginia Cureton, who served as Cocke County Clerk & Master for 24 years and also, with her husband, the late William Cureton, a World War II veteran, owned and operated the popular Log Cabin Inn restaurant for several years. Brockwell’s father also worked for the State of Tennessee Department of Transportation.
Brockwell has one sister, Karen Nelson, who, with her husband, owns The Furniture Palace, and two brothers, both retired, Terry and wife Susie, and Bill and wife Jane.
Her in-laws were the late W. L. (Dub) and Hazel Brockwell. At one time, current clerk Janice Butler and her sister were employees of the elder Brockwell when he owned Brock’s Market. “Dub had great respect for Jan in her time working at his store,” said the candidate.
“In the coming months, I will try to see as many voters as I can,” said Brockwell. “I look forward to traveling across the county and meeting you. Both my mother and father came from families with roots stretching back to Cocke County’s earliest days. I was brought up to love Cocke County and I believe that it is the best place in the world. As your Cocke County Clerk, I will do everything in my power to make our home even better. I humbly ask for your votes and support in my quest for this honored position.”
