John Russell Shults, Sr., 86, of 136 W. Seven Oaks Drive, husband of Mary Louise Shults, passed away Friday, May 5, 2006 at his residence after several years of declining health. Born on February 28, 1920 in Cocke County, TN., he was the son of the late Conley Hill and Rhoda McGaha Shults. After graduating from Carson-Newman College, he served his country during WWII as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy. He retired from Eaton Laboratories in 1977 having been the Southeast Regional Sales Manager and a national Urological Consultant. He was honored by memberships in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic Urological Association and American Association of Clinical Urologist. He was among the first non-MD’s to receive these recognitions. Mr. Shults was an active alumni of Carson-Newman College having served on both the Advisory Board and Board of Trustees. He received the Distinguished Alumni and the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Awards. He was a faithful, loyal member of the Fellowship Sunday School class and the First Baptist Church. He previously served on several boards including Greenville Hospital Hospice, Greenville County Health Department and Greenville Transit Authority. As a Mason, he was a member of the Recovery #31 AFM Lodge and the 32nd degree Scottish Rite. Surviving in addition to his wife of 63 years and closest friend, are daughters, Mary Linda Shults of the home, Martha Shults Popp of Brentwood, TN.; a son, J. Russell Shults Jr. and his wife Martha of Isle of Palms, SC; three grandchildren, Lauren Bryce Popp, Robert Kyle Popp and John Thomas Shults; a sister, Grace Crowder; niece, Brenda Crowder and her son, Will of Elizabethton, TN.; nephew, Russ Crowder of Wayzata, MN.; brother-in-law, Gene Gorman; nephew, Steve, his wife Debbie, and daughters, Meredith, and Mattie Gorman of Evansville, IN.; niece, Patty Gorman Brownlee her husband Steve, and daughter Sarah of Fremont, NE. and Evansville, IN.; nephews, David and Doug Shults and families of Erwin, TN; aunt, Anne McGaha Smith of Barnwell, SC.; cousins, Reba Faye Sane and Gray Junior Sparks of Parrotsville, TN; Bill and Odette Shults of Newport, and Annette Mason of Newport, TN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greenville County Cancer Society, 113 Mills Avenue, Greenville, SC 29602, whose generosity and kindness was steadfast, The Carson-Newman College Student Scholarship Fund, Jefferson City, TN. 37760, or Southern Care Hospice, Highway 101 South, Suite D11, Greer, SC 29651. The family wishes to thank his dedicated friends many of whom are members of the Fellowship Class for their loyalty and constancy over the years and during his extended illness. He and his family also are grateful to his caregivers, Heather Ballew, Connie Sherred and the friendship of Steve and June Black. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, May 07, 2006 at 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church, officiated by the Reverend Dr. Donna Forrester and the Reverend Dr. Jeff Rogers. Visitation will be held prior to the services from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at the church. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 pm Monday, May 08, 2006 at Manes Funeral Home, 363 E. Main Street, Newport, TN. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 pm at Union Memorial Park in Newport, TN. with Dr. James Netherton officiating. The family in at the home and welcomes people to join them on Saturday. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fellowship Class of First Baptist Church as well Bill Stone, Sonny Horton, Walter Heape, Hap Marshall, and Ken Herron.
