Layman enjoys hearing stories of veterans
Although Tennessee Museum of Aviation employee Sandy Layman works "behind the scenes," she always makes sure not to miss out on the museum's excitement.
"I really enjoy listening to the stories of the men and women who have served (in the military)," said Layman, the museum's bookkeeper. "If I know there are going to be reunion groups here, I make it a point to come down front."
Layman, a Sevier County native, has worked at the museum since April 2002 - just months after it opened. After leaving her job at Electrovoice when the plant closed in October 2000, she decided to take some time off. The next year, when she was studying business at Tennessee Technology Center in Knoxville, she noticed an opening at the new Museum of Aviation in Sevierville.
"It was close to home, and I thought it would be an interesting place to work - and it has been," she said.
She especially enjoys being part of the audience during the Tennessee Aviation Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
"It's so interesting to listen to their backgrounds. When you're young, you don't take much interest in it, but soon the people who served in World War II are not going to be here to tell their stories."
Layman's father-in-law, a World War II veteran, passed away in December.
She is intrigued by Evelyn Johnson, who has received countless aviation honors, including National Flight Instructor of the Year and a member of Women in Aviation Pioneers Hall of Fame. At almost 100 years old, Johnson continues to serve as manager of Morristown's Moore-Murell Airport.
Layman is also proud of the museum's Operation Warm Wings, which helps provide new winter coats to children in Sevier County. The coats are distributed in the fall.
"The museum gets the names of children in need from the school system. To see the little kids when they get their coats...it's heartwarming."
When she's not helping keep the museum in order, Layman enjoys bowling with a women's bowling league and photography. She also loves spending time with her family, including husband Cecil, her son and daughter and her grandchildren, all who live in the area.
"People are very impressed by this museum, by what they see and what they read. It's very educational information. People have long donated items that tell a story."
